Basketball Recap: La Vernia Comes Up Short

La Vernia and Fredericksburg squared off in some playoff action on Thursday, but La Vernia had to settle for second. They lost 56-35 to the Fredericksburg Billies. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 360th, while the Billies are ranked 34th).

When it comes to explaining why La Vernia lost, don't look at Lacey Matney. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 21 points and 11 boards. Matney has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played.

Even though they lost, La Vernia smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive boards in seven consecutive matches.

La Vernia's loss dropped their record down to 21-11. As for Fredericksburg, the win (which was their 20th in a row) raised their record to 29-6.

As of now, neither La Vernia nor Fredericksburg have any future games scheduled.
