Basketball Recap: Northfield Nighthawks vs. Denver East Angels

Northfield lost against Denver East last Friday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Northfield Nighthawks received a blow as they fell 60-43 to the Denver East Angels.

Despite the defeat, Northfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Madison Bethel posted 13 points and eight rebounds. That's the most boards Bethel has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was LaPorsha Allen, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Northfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. This was only their fourth loss (out of 12 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.

Denver East got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Mairead Hearty out in front who dropped a double-double with 22 points and 11 boards. Hearty is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in each of the last 14 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Evelina Otto, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Northfield's loss dropped their record down to 12-10. As for Denver East, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-8 record this season.

Northfield has already played their next contest, a 74-55 defeat against Riverdale Ridge on the 1st. As for Denver East, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 54-49 victory against Eaglecrest on the 1st.
