Baseball Recap: Southwood Takes a Loss

Southwood had lost seven straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 0-4 to make it eight. They lost 13-1 to the Mississinewa Indians. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Knights of the 3-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2023.

Southwood saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tucker Whybrew, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. That hit marked the first that Whybrew has got this season.

As for Mississinewa, they now have a winning record of 4-3. The contest marked their most dominant win of the season so far.

On Mississinewa's side, Gavin Baumgartner tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Baumgartner has become a key player for the Indians: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 1-2 otherwise.

At the plate, Lio Matamoros and Kellen Rock did most of the damage at the plate: Matamoros went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Rock went 1-for-2 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Rock a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryson Vasquez, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southwood will venture away from home to challenge Southern Wells at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mississinewa, they will head out to take on Northwestern at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Tigers will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Indians surely won't give up without a fight.
