Basketball Recap: Oaktree Academy Comes Up Short

Oaktree Academy came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They were outmatched by the Veritas Collegiate Academy Spartans and fell 91-45. While losing is never fun, the Grizzlies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 420th, while the Spartans are ranked 123rd).

It was another big night for Marcqell Freeman, who almost dropped a double-double with 24 points and nine assists for Veritas Collegiate Academy. Freeman has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 13 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Talon Wray, who shot 73% from the field on his way to 22 points and three steals.

Oaktree Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season. The victory was the third in a row for Veritas Collegiate Academy, bringing their record for this year to 22-8.

Oaktree Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Veritas Collegiate Academy, they will face off against Non Varsity Tournament Opponent on Thursday. Veritas Collegiate Academy will be up against Non Varsity Tournament Opponent's rather soft defense (which has allowed 55.17 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
