Union Academy put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on the Sun Valley Spartans with a sharp 11-1 win. The 11-run effort marked the Cardinals' lowest-scoring match of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Avery Wilson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one triple and two RBI.
In other batting news, Union Academy got a big performance out of Keira Farmer, who went 1-for-2 with three runs and one triple. That triple was Farmer's first of the season. Another player making a difference was Keilana Burgess, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
Union Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sun Valley only posted an OBP of .062.
Union Academy pushed their record up to 5-0 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Sun Valley, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
