Baseball Recap: Mayfield Gets the Win

Mayfield hadn't done well against Kenston recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Wildcats came out on top against the Bombers by a score of 9-4. This was a revenge game for the Wildcats: when they faced off against the Bombers back in April, they had to take a 5-4 loss.

The team relied heavily on JD Sega, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mayfield's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-16 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Ben Koret, who earned two runs and two stolen bases.

Mayfield hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Mayfield's win bumped their record up to 7-16. As for Kenston, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-17 record this season.

Mayfield and Kenston could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Wildcats will square off against Gilmour Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (313 vs. 50). Meanwhile, Kenston (ranked 417th) will meet Hiland (ranked eighth) at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
