Under the mud and muck, the
Damascus (Md.) football team finally finished a game in defeat.
The Hornets could muster only a touchdown during a 24-7 Maryland 2A West playoff loss to visiting
Oakdale (Ijamsville, Md.), which snapped Damascus' 53-game win streak that tied for longest in the nation with
Caledonia (Minn.).
Damascus had won three straight state titles and hadn't lost a game since the 2014 state 3A title game.
"It hurts. But the seniors have something they can be proud of," Damascus coach told the
Washington Post.
Oakdale improved to 11-0.
Caledonia (12-0), now the national leader for consecutive victories, plays for the Minnesota AA title Nov. 23 against Barnesville.
Royal (Royal City, Wash.) has the nation's second longest streak at 51 games.
A big crowd gathered at Damascus even under wet and cold conditions.
