Baseball Recap: Liberty Comes Up Short

Liberty entered their contest against Highland on Friday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. Liberty fell just short of Highland by a score of 6-4. Patriots fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Scots since on Friday.

Brady Baird was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.

In other batting news, Brady Gonzales made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

This is the second loss in a row for Liberty and nudges their season record down to 4-4. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 3-2 Buchanan (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 73.8% over those games). As for Highland, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-1.

Coming up, Liberty will square off against Buchanan at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Highland, they are taking a road trip to challenge Firebaugh at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Firebaugh has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.13 runs per game on average), something Highland will no doubt try to take advantage of.
