Break it in Texas and expect a parade.
According to the
Dallas Morning News,
McKinney (Texas) senior running back
Matt Gadek broke the Texas UIL 11-man state record for rushing yards in a game on Thursday with 599 during a wild 63-50 win over Plano East at Ron Poe Stadium.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder isn't on any recruiting list of note and hasn't received any college offers.
But he might after rushing 48 times for 599 yards and six touchdowns. He scored on runs of 1, 3, 36, 4, 69 and 30 yards.
Gadek broke the record of 587 set by Daryl Ellis of Somerville in a 1998 game against Thrall. Gadek's rushing totals were kept by the Dallas Morning News and reported as 592 yards, but coach Jeff Smith said the total was revised to 599 yards after coaches reviewed the game film. The total is still unofficial until verified.
His revised total means Gadek tied the overall state mark of 599 set in a 1978 private-league game by Ruday Rudison of Marian Christian (Houston).
The national record is 754 yards set by John Giannantonio of Netcong (N.J.) in 1950, according to the NFHS record book.
McKinney improved to 6-1 with the victory and Gadek, through five games, had piled up 862 yards on 122 carries (7.1 average) and five touchdowns. He's been a model of consistency during his varsity career, rushing for 1,406 yards and 15 touchdowns as a sophomore and 1,473 yards and 11 TDs as a junior.
About breaking the state record, Gadek told the Morning News: "I knew we had a chance the whole game. They couldn't stop our O-line. We just kept pounding the rock."
