League recap: Highland climbs in standings with win

Highland was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in I Section II. The Hawks vanquished Mesa 24-21 earlier in the week.

Hamilton extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Basha, 31-24. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

Bryce Perkins put up the best numbers through the air as Chandler beat Gilbert. He finished with a total of three completions for 53 yards and 34 touchdowns. Perkins' favorite target this week was Patrick Baldenegro, who caught five passes for 82 yards.

Dominique Drake was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 275 yards on 11 carries as Buena bested Desert View.

Sims was the best wideout in I Section II this week as the Colts topped the Jaguars. Sims tallied four receptions for 121 yards. Drake helped Buena's passing attack out by catching one ball for 53 yards.

Zach Werlinger provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Bears lost to Hamilton. He completed 18 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 139 yards. Werlinger's favorite target this week was Ronnie Querry, who caught five passes for 55 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Darell Garretson of the Wolves is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2486. He has also thrown 23 touchdowns. On the ground, Buena's Drake has rushed for 1621 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Nate Phillips. The Basha star has 57 catches for 897 yards.

Basha's Rajhan Meriwether is a mere 41 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 155 carries Meriwether has accumulated 959 yard this year.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Ryan Scherling's team takes on Sunnyside. The Colts are in third place, while the Blue Devils are in eighth place.

Highland and the Jackrabbits played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Highland eventually emerging with a 24-21 victory. Blake Young threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 16 yards in the win.
