Baseball Recap: Shepherd Pirates vs. Hargrave Falcons

Shepherd extended their losing streak to nine on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 7-14 in the process. They came up short against the Hargrave Falcons, falling 9-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Falcons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-0 on Tuesday.

As for Hargrave, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-8-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games.

For Hargrave's part, Logan Gruber looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Gruber has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, KJ Daniel was excellent, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Chance Fields was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one run.

Coming up, Shepherd will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Hardin-Jefferson at 7:00 p.m. The Hawks will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something the Pirates surely won't give up without a fight. As for Hargrave, they will head out on the road to face off against Hamshire-Fannett at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
