Softball Recap: Gilbert Comes Up Short

Gilbert extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 8-12. They lost 10-0 to the Queen Creek Bulldogs. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 18-0 on Tuesday.

As for Queen Creek, their victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-0. Considering they have won 18 games by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

For Queen Creek's part, Alexis Mendez tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Mendez has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Keira Weekly was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 11 contests. The team also got some help courtesy of Alessia Velazquez, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Gilbert will face off against Higley at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Knights have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.2 runs per game on average), something the Tigers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Queen Creek, they will square off against Red Mountain at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mountain Lions have averaged an impressive 10.2 runs per game this season.
