Sunnyside has gone 9-1 against Marana recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Blue Devils will look to defend their home field against the Tigers at 6:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Marana will be up against a hot Sunnyside squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. The Blue Devils walked away with an 11-6 win over Tucson High Magnet School on Thursday.
Tatyana Vega was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Vega was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kasandra Alcaraz, who went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bianca Cobo, who scored three runs while going 2-for-4.
Sunnyside kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, while Marana put up plenty of runs on Thursday, the same can't be said for Rincon/University. The Tigers were the clear victors by an 18-0 margin over the Rangers. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won nine contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Emma Winter tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one walk in 12 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Marana let Bella Corona and Maya Cormell run wild. Corona went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Cormell scored a run and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Bella Sayre was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-2.
Sunnyside's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-6-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Marana, their victory bumped their record up to 14-10.
Marana's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sunnyside has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Marana, though, as they've been averaging 8.7 hits. Given Sunnyside's sizable advantage in that area, the Tigers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Sunnyside was able to grind out a solid win over Marana when the teams last played last Thursday, winning 13-9. Do the Blue Devils have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
