Basketball Recap: Ashley Comes Up Short

If Ashley was feeling good fresh off their 48-6 takedown of Coastal Christian on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Screaming Eagle lost 68-45 to the Jacksonville Cardinals on Monday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Screaming Eagle of the 48-31 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in November of 2024.

Despite the loss, Ashley saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Chloe Laverty posted nine points and five boards.

Leading Jacksonville to victory were Izabella Hernandez and Destini Benton. Hernandez earned 27 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds, while Benton put up 19 points and eight steals. Those seven assists gave Hernandez a new career-high. Riley Hoopes was another key player, putting up nine points and six boards.

Ashley's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Ashley didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 48-46 victory against Swansboro on the 18th. As for Jacksonville, they will head out on the road to challenge Kinston at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
