Football Recap: Wirt County Piles Up the Points Against Calhoun

Wirt County won the last time they faced Calhoun and things went their way on Friday too. The Tigers blew past the Red Devils, posting a 42-12 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Tigers.

Wirt County found their leader in sophomore Adryon Hartford, who rushed for 187 yards and one touchdown while picking up 10.4 yards per carry. Another player making a difference was Tyler Smith, who threw for 156 yards and three TDs while completing 73.1% of his passes.

Wirt County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 340 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in September of 2024.

Wirt County's defense made their presence known, laying out Brennen Carpenter. four times. Easton Wyer refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself.

Calhoun's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gavin Hicks, who picked up 47 receiving yards and a pair of scores. The Red Devils also got help from Chase Schoolcraft, who showed off his sure hands for 120 receiving yards.

Wirt County now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Calhoun, they now have a losing record of 1-2.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Wirt County is set to challenge their familiar foe Gilmer County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 950 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Calhoun will face off against rival Wahama at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
