Softball Recap: Floyd County Comes Up Short

If Floyd County was feeling good fresh off their 12-3 takedown of Carroll County last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Buffaloes fell just short of the Alleghany Cougars by a score of 6-5 on Thursday. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 22, 2023, but that streak is no more.

Emma Biesterveld spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Lilly Gillispie was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Ava DeJesus, who went 1-for-4 with two runs.

Floyd County dropped their record down to 11-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Alleghany, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.

Alleghany will head out to face off against Glenvar at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Floyd County will be paying especially close attention to the Cougars' contest: after the Cougars face off against the Highlanders, they'll take on Floyd County again at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
