Baseball Game Preview: Mount Sinai Mustangs vs. Islip Buccaneers

For the second straight game, Mount Sinai will face off against Islip. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Buccaneers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Mount Sinai 3.2, Islip 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Mount Sinai will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Friday, then bounced right back against Islip on Tuesday. The Mustangs were the clear victors by an 11-3 margin over the Buccaneers.

Jake Zabbara tossed a big game, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He is becoming a predictor of Mount Sinai's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 4-8 when he doesn't).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Benny Franquiz, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. John Leonard was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Mount Sinai kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 10.

Mount Sinai's win bumped their record up to 6-9. As for Islip, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season.
