Basketball Recap: Johnson Comes Up Short

If Johnson was feeling good fresh off their 53-19 takedown of Southeast Bulloch last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Johnson Atomsmashers were dealt a 71-16 loss at the hands of the Clearwater Tornadoes on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Atomsmashers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 434th in Georgia, while the Tornadoes are ranked 162nd in Florida).

Clearwater had a senior duo take command as Taina Sturdivant posted 16 points and Peyton Flournoy earned 14 points. The game was Sturdivant's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Da'Neria Jones, who put up six points.

Johnson has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season. As for Clearwater, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-4.

Johnson didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 53-22 defeat against Woodville-Tompkins on the 21st. As for Clearwater, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 78-34 victory against New Hampstead on the 21st.
