Mattoon and Mt. Vernon are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Greenwave will head out to face off against the Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Mattoon is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.

On Thursday, Mattoon didn't have quite enough to beat Teutopolis and fell 4-3.

Mathew Miller was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon got themselves on the board against Cahokia on Thursday, but Cahokia never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Comanches with a sharp 15-0 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Rams.

The team relied heavily on Alex Kiefer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mt. Vernon's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 3-12 when he doesn't). Hayden McKee was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

Mt. Vernon hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive games.

Mt. Vernon's record now sits at 7-13. As for Mattoon, their loss dropped their record down to 11-10.

Mattoon skirted past Mt. Vernon 5-3 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Greenwave since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
