Laurel had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Ellwood City Wolverine an 11-0 shutout on Friday. That's more bragging rights for the Spartans, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
Not much got past Riley Balcom, who gave up just four hits and racked up ten Ks to keep Ellwood City off the board.
On the hitting side, Hailey Fell was incredible, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Maddie Evans, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Ellwood City's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Laurel will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on Mercer at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Ellwood City, they will challenge South Side at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
