Baseball Game Preview: Ellwood City Wolverine vs. Mohawk Area Warriors

For the second straight game, Ellwood City will face off against Mohawk Area. The Wolverine will head out on the road to face off against the Warriors at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Ellwood City is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.

Ellwood City proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by 16) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over Mohawk Area. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverine have posted since March 27th.

For Mohawk Area's part, Bobby Fadden was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Fadden has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Fadden wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Vinny Pezzuolo, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Pezzuolo has become a key player for Mohawk Area: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three hits, but 5-6 otherwise.

Ellwood City pushed their record up to 12-4 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mohawk Area, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-7.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Ellwood City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mohawk Area struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
