MaxPreps National Football Player of the Year Watch

Several record breakers among this week's group.

A number of record breakers are in this week's National Player of the Year Watch, including Shuler Bentley, Elijah Marks and newcomer Dallas Cook.

Grier concluded the regular season with a 382-yard effort in a 40-6 win over Victory Christian Center. He completed 27 of 41 passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions. He is still tied for the national lead in touchdowns with 53. He has completed 238 of 351 passes for 3,453 yards. He is tied for fifth place all-time in touchdown passes with 171 in his career.

In a 52-0 win over Ponderosa, Browning was 29 of 34 for 337 yards and six touchdowns. Browning has thrown at least six touchdowns five times this season. He is 238 of 311 on the season for a 76.5 completion percentage. He has 3,458 yards and 49 touchdowns. Browning can pass Joe Southwick of San Ramon Valley for the all-time Northern California career yardage record with just under 100 yards passing this week. Southwick threw for 8,802 yards while Browning has 8,706.

White continued his spectacular play of late with another 400-yard performance, this time in a 67-7 win over Grand Prairie. He completed 24 of 36 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns. For the season, White has completed 163 of 238 passes for 2,699 yards and 26 touchdowns. He is also on the verge of 1,000 yards rushing with 993 yards on 95 carries with 14 touchdowns.

Chubb had a big game in defeat as he rushed 29 times for 219 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-35 loss to Gilmer. He has run 238 times for 2,371 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Grant Sherman, Kenton (Ohio)


Sherman continues to lead the nation in passing yardage after completing 29 of 41 passes for 431 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-8 win over Defiance. Sherman has thrown for 4,062 yards while completing 297 of 453 passes with 45 touchdowns.

Cook has been rewriting the record books in Montana and has garnered some Division I looks after throwing for over 3,700 yards for a second straight season. His Butte team will open the playoffs against Glacier and he could become the first Montana quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. He has completed 271 of 416 passes for 3,733 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Marks set the single season record for receiving yardage in Arizona after catching 12 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-16 win over Agua Fria. For the season, Marks has 1,802 yards receiving on 86 receptions. He is also one of the national leaders with 21 touchdown receptions.

Hood had a huge night in a 49-24 win over Ardrey Kell as he carried 18 times for 351 yards and six touchdowns. He now leads North Carolina with 2,330 yards rushing on 229 attempts and 32 touchdowns.

Deshaun Watson, Gainesville (Ga.)


Watson was very efficient in a 63-0 win over Loganville as he completed nine passes in 17 attempts with four of those catches going for touchdowns. His 188 yards passing gives him 2,546 yards on the season. He also ran four times for 78 yards.

Bentley had his lowest passing totals of the season in a 54-14 win over Dorman as he completed 14 of 24 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. He still managed to set a state record, however, as he concluded the game with 159 career touchdown passes.
