Baseball Recap: St. Dominic Saints vs. Sacopee Valley Hawks
St. Dominic had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 2-6 to make it seven. They fell just short of the Sacopee Valley Hawks by a score of 5-3. The Saints were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hawks apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.
St. Dominic saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ben Dumais, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one double. That double marked the first that Dumais has hit this season.
As for Sacopee Valley, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-3. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games.
On Sacopee Valley's side, Silas Nielsen made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Nielsen was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Sacopee Valley's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-3 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Braiden Croteau and Cooper Berkowitz did most of the damage at the plate: Croteau got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one double and one RBI, while Berkowitz got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. Berkowitz is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
Coming up, St. Dominic will challenge Waynflete at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Sacopee Valley, they will take on Buckfield at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
