Baseball Recap: Galena Wins Going Away Against Verona

Galena got themselves on the board against Verona on Friday, but Verona never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 17-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won nine in a row.

Jaxon Foster made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those stolen bases were his first of the season.

In other batting news, Cody Jones was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Galena's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-3 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Esiya Weeks, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Galena hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.

Galena now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Verona, they are on a 27-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-9.

Galena and Verona could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Missouri Rankings. The Bears (ranked 347th) will meet Billings (ranked 170th) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Verona will take on Miller at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (483 vs. 160).
