Baseball Game Preview: West Warriors vs. Costa Mesa Mustangs

The West Warriors will challenge the Costa Mesa Mustangs at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (West 3.6, Costa Mesa 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.

On Saturday, West needed a bit of extra time to put away Peninsula. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Panthers 4-3.

Reef Sharman made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.

Sharman wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Tad Tiomico, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. That's the most hits Tiomico has posted since back in April of 2024.

West kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, it looked like the Kentucky Derby when Costa Mesa duked it out with Covina on Saturday. The Mustangs were the clear victors by a 10-1 margin over the Colts. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Costa Mesa pushed their record up to 11-6 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. As for West, their record now sits at 6-9.

West took their victory against Costa Mesa in their previous meeting back in April of 2016 by a conclusive 9-2 score. Will the Warriors repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
