Baseball Recap: St. Pius X Wins High-Profile Match Against Grants

St. Pius X faced Grants in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Sartans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 3-1 on April 4th.

Hunter Jiron tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over six innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because St. Pius X is 5-2 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 8-9 otherwise.

At the plate, Jacob Madrid was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. He has become a key player for St. Pius X: the team is undefeated when he posts at least one home run, but 9-11 otherwise.

St. Pius X is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-11 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.9 runs over those games. As for Grants, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 13-6 record.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. St. Pius X will challenge rival Valencia at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Grants is set to face off against their familiar foe Highland at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
