Basketball Recap: Lucy Mehlis' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Lane Tech over Bloom

If Lane Tech was feeling good fresh off their 79-15 takedown of Lincoln Park on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Champions lost to the Bloom Blazing Trojan on the road by a 54-36 margin on Sunday. While losing is never fun, the Champions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 253rd, while the Blazing Trojan are ranked ninth).

Several Champions players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Lucy Mehlis, who posted eight points. The team also got some help courtesy of Vega Ransom-Marks, who put up 14 points and three steals.

Bloom was led to victory by Kazaria(Kuh-Zar-E-Ah) Smith and Kamyrn Turner. Smith dropped a double-double with 18 points and ten boards, while Turner shot 64% from the field en route to 19 points and four steals. Turner is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed four or more in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sinaee(Suh-Nae) Price, who scored four points and three steals.

Lane Tech's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Bloom, the win keeps them at an undefeated 6-0.

Looking ahead, Lane Tech is taking a road trip to challenge New Trier at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Trevians have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Bloom, they have already played their next contest, a 65-33 victory against Kankakee on the 8th.
