Preview: Mount Vernon Tigers vs. Commerce Tigers

Mount Vernon is 5-0 against Commerce since September of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Mount Vernon Tigers will be playing at home against the Commerce Tigers at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Friday, Mount Vernon was fully in charge, breezing past Rains 42-12 on the road.

Mount Vernon can attribute much of their success to Kam Doss, who rushed for 101 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries. Treylan Dunlap was another key contributor, rushing for 125 yards on only 13 carries.

Meanwhile, Commerce made easy work of Rains two weeks ago and carried off a 32-8 win. The result was nothing new for Commerce, who have now won four matchups by 22 points or more so far this season.

Commerce found their leader in underclassman Treyvion Carter, who rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.9 yards per carry. Carter was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 68 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Orso, who threw for 137 yards and a touchdown on only 13 passes.

Their wins bumped Mount Vernon to 5-3 and Commerce to 6-1.

Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Mount Vernon has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 172.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Commerce struggles in that department as they've been even better at 263.6 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.

Mount Vernon took their win against Commerce when the teams last played back in October of 2022 by a conclusive 44-24. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Commerce's Da'shawn Jackson, who picked up 145 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Mount Vernon to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
