Baseball Recap: Utica Takes a Loss

Utica extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 13-15. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Blue Devils this season, with their most recent defeat being a 8-7 loss on Tuesday.

As for Grosse Pointe South, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 19-10. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.75 runs across that stretch.

For Grosse Pointe South's part, Brody Vinyard spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up eight Ks. Vinyard has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Grosse Pointe South saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Quinn Steinhebel, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Looking ahead, Utica will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Marysville at 10:00 a.m. As for Grosse Pointe South, they are taking a road trip to challenge Mt. Pleasant at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
