Baseball Game Preview: Horizon Huskies vs. Sunnyslope Vikings

The Horizon Huskies will be taking part in a tournament against the Sunnyslope Vikings at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

Horizon is looking to give their home crowd another W after opening their season at home on Wednesday. They skirted past Flagstaff 9-7.

Hunter Walker looked comfortable as he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Colten Figueroa, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in hits (three). Ethan Trahan was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Sunnyslope posted their closest victory since March 20, 2024 on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Canyon del Oro, sneaking past 3-1.

Bryan Mares made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Mares was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Mares wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Wes Griffin, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Horizon came up short against Sunnyslope in their previous matchup back in April of 2016, falling 4-1. Can Horizon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
