Softball Game Preview: Haddam-Killingworth Cougars vs. Old Lyme Wildcats

The Haddam-Killingworth Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Old Lyme Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Old Lyme will be up against a hot Haddam-Killingworth squad: the team just extended their winning streak to six. The Cougars were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over East Lyme on Wednesday.

Emma Giaccone was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Olivia LaTorre was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Claire Eighmy was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

Meanwhile, after only one run in their last match, Old Lyme made sure to put some runs up on the board against Portland on Friday. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Highlanders with a sharp 16-5 victory. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Wildcats' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Haddam-Killingworth pushed their record up to 12-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Old Lyme, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-7.

Haddam-Killingworth took their victory against Old Lyme when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 15-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
