The Hesperia Scorpions will head out on the road to challenge the Miller Rebels at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Hesperia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Hesperia is headed into the game having just posted their closest victory since February 17th on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over Apple Valley. While the Scorpions didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Josh Flores was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Miller). They were the clear victor by a 15-0 margin over Pacific on Wednesday. The Rebels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matches by eight runs or more this season.
Ilya Ridge made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Miller is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 1-3 otherwise. Ridge was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other pitching news, Beckmond Kraynak looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those zero hits allowed gave him a new career-low.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Raphael Sotelo, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of David Trujillo, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Miller was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. The last time their batting average was this high was back in February of 2024.
The victory made it two in a row for Miller and bumps their season record up to 5-5. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing eight strikeouts in those games compared to only 2.63 in the others. As for Hesperia, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-3.
Hesperia's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's contest. Hesperia has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Miller, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Hesperia continue to outrun the ball?
Hesperia skirted past Miller 6-4 in their previous meeting back in February of 2015. Will Hesperia repeat their success, or does Miller have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
