It was another big night for Justin Fisher, who rushed for 112 yards and one TD on only 13 carries, and also picked up 43 receiving yards. His rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 112 rushing yards.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Springfield). They pulled ahead with a 35-34 photo finish over North Eugene on Friday. Surprisingly, this marked the Millers' seventh straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Springfield's win came from a few key players Thurston will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Khamani James, who rushed for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 10.0 yards per carry, and also picked up 78 receiving yards. He was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield on a catch that went for 57 yards. Another player making a difference was Noah Solo, who rushed for 97 yards and one score.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Springfield was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 313 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.
Springfield's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Thurston, their record is now 4-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Thurston has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 157.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Springfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 204.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Thurston against Springfield when the teams last played back in September of 2024, as the team secured a 39-7 win. In that game, the Colts amassed a halftime lead of 20-0, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
