Preview: Brevard Blue Devils vs. Polk County Wolverines
Brevard has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Polk County Wolverines at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Tuesday, Brevard was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 63-58 to Hendersonville. While losing is never fun, Brevard can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 281st, while Hendersonville is ranked 133rd).
Despite their loss, Brevard saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Ben Kessinger, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, was perhaps the best of all. Kessinger is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Tre Crite, who scored 16 points along with two steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Polk County's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their seventh straight defeat. They took a 86-71 bruising from East Rutherford. Polk County has not had much luck with East Rutherford recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Brevard's defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-10. As for Polk County, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-19 record this season.
Everything went Brevard's way against Polk County in their previous matchup back in January as Brevard made off with a 85-65 victory. In that contest, Brevard amassed a halftime lead of 54-31, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Thursday.
