High school basketball: States with most players on NBA second-round playoff rosters

By Thomas Frey May 2, 2023, 11:45am

California leads list followed by Texas, Florida and Maryland.

The first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs had some amazing matchups before wrapping up Sunday with the Warriors beating the Kings in Game 7.

Second-round matchups between the Phoenix Suns vs. Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks vs. Miami Heat have already begun, while the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers tip-off tonight.

We took a deep dive into high school basketball programs with the most alumni on the rosters of teams in the second round of the playoffs. While transfers cloud the picture, we connected players to the school where they finished their prep career.

Between the eight remaining teams, 10 players have California roots — more than any other state. Klay Thompson of Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), James Harden of Artesia (Lakewood) and Aaron Gordon of Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) highlight the players from the Golden State.

Texas is second with nine players, including Jimmy Butler. The Tomball star averaged 37.6 points per game in Miami's first-round upset of the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks.

Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) and Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) each have three players who finished their prep hoops career, tied for the most of any other program in the country. Kevin Durant, Terrence Ross and Ish Wainright hail from Montrose while R.J. Barrett, Moses Moody and D'Angelo Russell went to Montverde.
