Baseball Recap: Marquette's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Marquette took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Calumet, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Sentinels had just enough and edged out the Copper Kings 3-1. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Sentinels as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Alex Brennan spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Gib Jezewski, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Wes Robinson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.

Marquette's victory bumped their record up to 8-5. As for Calumet, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marquette will take on Menominee at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Maroons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.25 runs per game on average), something the Sentinels will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Calumet, they will host Negaunee at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
