Archbishop Alter (Kettering, Ohio) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 11 points, drop to eight before the final whistle blew on a 35-27 victory over
Archbishop McNicholas (Cincinnati, Ohio).
The Knights led 21-17 at halftime, but the Rockets recaptured the lead on a touchdown pass by
Austin Ernst to
Luke Sulken with 10:00 remaining in the third. Archbishop Alter grabbed hold of the lead when
Danny Smith ran for a touchdown with 7:00 left in the third quarter, and never relinquished it.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at four entering the fourth.
Ernst made a difference for Archbishop McNicholas. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns.
Malik Zaire was the top performer for AA. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. A member of the Top 25 Combo Quarterbacks, Zaire has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
The Kettering school also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 27-24.
With the win the Knights extended their winning streak to four games.
Archbishop McNicholas (4-3) will play a Greater Catholic - Central game against Roger Bacon next week, while Archbishop Alter (6-0) will take on Carroll in a Greater Catholic - North game.
