Softball Game Preview: Hinsdale South Hornets vs. Leyden Eagles

Hinsdale South and Leyden are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Hornets will square off against the Eagles at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Hinsdale South has given up an average of 9.9 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

If Hinsdale South beats Leyden with 18 runs on Monday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Hornets beat Willowbrook on Saturday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 18-15. Surprisingly, this marked the Hornets' third straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Hinsdale South let Lauren Bishop and Kayla Buckels-Meen run wild. Bishop went 3-for-6 with one home run, seven RBI, and three runs, while Buckels-Meen went 4-for-6 with one home run, five runs, and four RBI. Bishop is on a roll when it comes to RBI, as she's now brought in three or more in each of the last three games she's played. Jordyn Lucas was another key player, going 2-for-6 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Hinsdale South kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Wednesday as neither Leyden nor Berwyn/Cicero Morton made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Eagles narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Mustangs 2-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.

Arianna Gallo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up eight Ks.

Hinsdale South's record is now 7-22-1. As for Leyden, their record now sits at 11-13.

Hinsdale South was able to grind out a solid victory over Leyden in their previous matchup on May 2nd, winning 7-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
