Basketball Recap: West Carteret Comes Up Short

After flying high against Pamlico County last Wednesday, West Carteret came back down to earth. The West Carteret Patriots fell 72-63 to the Havelock Rams on Friday. While the Patriots didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Rams 20-14 in the first quarter.

Despite the loss, West Carteret still got an impressive performance from Jay Murray, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 13 boards. Murray is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Nehemiah Hester, who went 7 of 14 en route to 16 points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, West Carteret smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 20 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Jaylen Hewitt had a dynamite game for Havelock, dropping a double-double on 28 points and ten boards. With that strong performance, Hewitt is now averaging an impressive 2.3 blocks per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Chris Strong, who went 9 of 17 on his way to 23 points.

West Carteret's record now sits at 5-2. As for Havelock, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season.

West Carteret wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 56-45 victory against New Bern on the 31st. As for Havelock, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against D.H. Conley at 7:30 p.m. on January 3rd. D.H. Conley is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.6 points per game this season.
