Softball Recap: St. Raphael Academy Wins High-Profile Match Against East Providence

St. Raphael Academy faced East Providence in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Saints blew past the Townies 8-1. The Saints might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.

Isabella Sousa made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Sousa wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Noelle Welch, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. That stolen base marked the first that Welch has snagged this season. Another was Lily Briere, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

St. Raphael Academy has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for East Providence, their defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 7-9.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Raphael Academy will take on Cranston West at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. As for East Providence, they will challenge Moses Brown at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
