Football Recap: Maxwell Starts off Right with Win over Sutherland

Maxwell had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They strolled past the Sutherland Sailors with points to spare, taking the game 44-28. The victory continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Sailors: they've now won five in a row.

Jesse Reyes was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 185 yards and five scores while picking up 11.6 yards per carry. His rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his fifth straight game with at least 134 rushing yards dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jagger Kleewein, who rushed for 61 yards and one touchdown on only five carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Maxwell was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 313 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 189 rushing yards in five consecutive games dating back to last season.

When it comes to explaining why Sutherland lost, don't look at Jackson Saner. Despite the final result, he rushed for 81 yards and one TD, and also threw for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Easton Smith also helped with two scores in total.

Maxwell didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 66-12 loss against Hitchcock County on the 5th. As for Sutherland, they have also already played their next match, a 56-8 defeat against St. Patrick's on the 5th.
