Softball Recap: Waverly Central Comes Up Short

Waverly Central extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping them down to 8-19. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Houston County Fighting Irish. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Fighting Irish apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2023.

Waverly Central saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ashton Cash, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double. That double marked the first that Cash has hit this season.

As for Houston County, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games.

On Houston County's side, the team relied heavily on Peyton Brooks, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Brooks has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Kenleigh Finch was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Waverly Central will challenge Montgomery Central at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Indians' pitching crew has only allowed three runs per game this season, so the Tigers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Houston County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
