Baseball Recap: St. Brendan Gets the Win

St. Brendan owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mater Academy Charter Lions, sneaking past 2-0. For the Sabres, this counts as revenge for the 6-5 win the Lions walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

The result came thanks to Jan Perez Fernandez's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up seven Ks. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts.

At the plate, Kevin Leon was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two).

St. Brendan has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing 8.25 strikeouts in those games compared to only 3.71 in the others. Mater Academy Charter's defeat was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 5-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Brendan will host Southwest at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. Brendan's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Southwest's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mater Academy Charter, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Mater Academy Charter Lions duke it out with Killian Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The last three games they have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
