Basketball Recap: Bree White's Big Game Can't Quite Lead St. Joseph Academy over Mentor

St. Joseph Academy was the 50-31 winner over Mentor when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The St. Joseph Academy Jaguars fell just short of the Mentor Cardinals by a score of 50-47 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Jaguars have suffered since January 20, 2024.

Several Jaguars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Bree White, who posted five points and 11 boards. Kate Mocho was another key player, putting up 12 points along with six boards and four steals.

Even though they lost, St. Joseph Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in five consecutive matchups.

Nina Rodriguez continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Mentor, going 8 of 19 on her way to 23 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Ferritto, who had 11 points.

St. Joseph Academy's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 5-5. As for Mentor, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season.

A feisty cat fight will be fought when the St. Joseph Academy Jaguars face off against the Elyria Catholic Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on January 6th. As for Mentor, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 71-53 victory against Cleveland Heights on the 3rd.
