Softball Game Preview: Hobart Brickies vs. Portage Indians

Hobart is a perfect 5-0 against Portage since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Brickies will take on the Indians at 11:00 a.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

Hobart managed to slip by Kankakee Valley the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Brickies came up short against the Kougars on Thursday, falling 11-4. The Brickies have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Hobart saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ladan Weinman, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Another was Taylor Lopez, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Portage lost 16-3 to Illiana Christian on Friday. The loss was the Indians' first of the season.

Breanna Reed made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Reed is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season.

Hobart now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Portage, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

Saturday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Hobart hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .353. However, it's not like Portage struggles in that department as they've averaged .511. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Everything went Hobart's way against Portage in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Hobart made off with an 8-2 victory. Will the Brickies repeat their success, or do the Indians have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
