Softball Recap: Thornton Academy Comes Up Short

Thornton Academy extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-6 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 14-13 heartbreaker at the hands of the South Portland Red Riots. Even if the Trojans couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Theresa Eng stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she fired off two home runs, six RBI, and one double while going 3-for-4. Allison Dattilo also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

As for South Portland, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since May 6, 2024.

On South Portland's side, the team relied heavily on Annalise Soucy, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Those four RBI gave Soucy a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jillian Edgar, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Thornton Academy will take on Marshwood at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.56 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for South Portland, they will face off against Kennebunk at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Rams will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
