Basketball Recap: South Fremont Comes Up Short in High-Profile Contest with Sugar-Salem

On Wednesday, South Fremont faced Sugar-Salem in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The South Fremont Cougars were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 49-48 to the Sugar-Salem Diggers. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Diggers this season, with their most recent loss being a 58-52 defeat last Friday.

South Fremont lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Brianne Bailey, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Brookie Bair, who almost dropped a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, South Fremont smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in ten consecutive games.

Sugar-Salem was led to victory by Monika Nead and Ashlyn Harris. Nead went 8-for-11 on her way to 17 points and five rebounds, while Harris scored 14 points and five boards. Nead is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as she's posted one of at least 47% in the last 14 games she's played.

South Fremont's loss dropped their record down to 19-4. As for Sugar-Salem, the win keeps them at an undefeated 22-0.

South Fremont wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 61-41 victory against Teton on the 8th. As for Sugar-Salem, they have also already played their next contest, a 49-45 win against South Fremont on the 11th.
