Basketball Recap: Maryvale Takes a Loss

Maryvale was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 21st straight loss dating back to last season. They were dealt a 98-9 defeat at the hands of the Cesar Chavez Champions. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 272nd, while the Champions are ranked 55th).

Several Panthers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Aniya Taylor, who posted six points along with five boards and three steals. Taylor is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played.

Cesar Chavez's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Malia Woodberry, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 15 steals. Woodberry is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Lakeisha Robinson, who made all 9 shots she took to post 18 points and five steals.

Maryvale's loss dropped their record down to 0-20. As for Cesar Chavez, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-6.

Maryvale didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 34-18 defeat against Tolleson on the 6th. Cesar Chavez has also already played their next game, a 93-6 win against Browne on the 6th.
