Softball Recap: Gillespie Miners vs. Newton Eagles
Gillespie and Newton squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Gillespie had to settle for second. They fell just short of the Newton Eagles by a score of 3-2. Gillespie's loss signaled the end of their 15-game winning streak.
Emma Gipson was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She struck out seven batters over eight innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Gipson has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 25 consecutive pitching appearances. Gipson was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
In other batting news, Sadie Sholtis made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Gillespie's defeat dropped their record down to 29-5. As for Newton, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 29-7 record this season.
