Basketball Recap: Hannah Waite's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Virgin Valley over Mater Academy East Las Vegas

If Virgin Valley was riding high fresh off their 61-38 takedown of Lincoln County last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Virgin Valley Bulldogs took a 45-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mater Academy East Las Vegas Knights. The Bulldogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Knights apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Virgin Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hannah Waite, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. Waite is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Mady Wright was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Even though they lost, Virgin Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

Mater Academy East Las Vegas got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was London Scott out in front who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 16 boards. Those 16 rebounds gave Scott a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Amija Macon, who posted ten points in addition to eight boards and four blocks.

Virgin Valley has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-6 record this season. As for Mater Academy East Las Vegas, their victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-5.

Virgin Valley wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 51-12 win against Pinecrest Academy Cadence on the 10th. As for Mater Academy East Las Vegas, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, an 89-12 victory against Cristo Rey St. Viator on the 10th.
